Abstract

The canon of Dort synod describes the doctrine of predestination of the Reformed against the Remonstrants. This paper compares the doctrine of God of the canon and the Remonstrants by observing the description about God described in the canon. First, we begin with a statement about God expressed in the canon, and we can see that the two characters of God, namely righteousness and love constitute the framework of the canon. And the structure of God’s righteousness and love has a close relationship with man's salvation as work of God. In particular, the meaning of sin that the canon premises helps not only the understanding of man, but also more clearly show the character of works of God. By looking at the way God works in relation to salvation, it turns out that the canon understands the problem of salvation in relation to God's attributes. It is based on the incomprehensibility of God that the canon criticizes God’s understanding of the Remonstrants. It points out that the act over this incomprehensibility of God is curiosity of man. And the canon states that in the problem about God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility, which is the most important question, it is the right way to follow not man’s reasoning but the Bible’s teachings and that both do not conflict. Rather, the right response to man is to fear God. Although the canon deals with the understanding of God in this way, the canon discusses this issue based on utter practical interest. It is answering the real problems of the church, such as the election of infant, the doctrine of reprobation and the Ethic. Through this discussion it reveals that the doctrine of God of the Remonstrant is human-centered based on human experience, but that the doctrine of God of the canon of Dort is God-centered based on the Bible.
