귀도 드 브레(Guido de Brès, 1522-1567)의 재세례파 반대의 이유:『재세례파의 뿌리와 기원 및 기초』(La Racine)를 중심으로

초록

벨직 신앙고백서의 저자 귀도 드 브레(Guido de Brès, 1522-1567)는 종교개혁 시기 저지대(the Low Countries) 남부 지역에서 개혁교회의 성도들을 섬기고 양육했던 목회자였으며, 신앙고백서 외에도 다수의 저서들을 집필했다. 본 논문에서는 드 브레의 중요한 저작 중 하나인 『재세례파의 뿌리와 기원 및 기초』(La Racine)를 소개하고 이 저술을 중심으로 그가 재세례파를 반대했던 이유를 분석해보고자 한다. 재세례파는 1534년 뮌스터(Münster)를 무력으로 점령하여 ‘새 예루살렘’을 건설하려는 폭력적인 모습을 보였는데, 드 브레는 과거 뮌스터를 점령했던 그 무리가 현재 저지대 재세례파의 뿌리임을 지적한다. 그는 위정자들이 재세례파의 체제전복성을 경계하고 있다는 사실을 예민하게 감지하고 있었고, 따라서 재세례파와 달리 저지대의 개혁교회는 왕실과 위정자들의 권위를 존중한다는 사실을 보이려 끊임없이 노력했다. 즉, 그가 재세례파를 반대한 이유에는 그러한 정치적 혹은 현실적인 이유가 존재했다. 그러나 그의 저서 『재세례파의 뿌리와 기원 및 기초』는 드 브레가 재세례파를 반대했던 데에는 현실적인 이유를 넘어 근본적인 이유가 있었음을 보여주는데, 그것은 재세례파의 ‘이단성’이 개혁교회의 성도들을 미혹하고 있었기 때문이었다. 특히 드 브레는 첫째, 재세례파가 성경 외에도 꿈과 이상과 같은 또 다른 계시의 수단이 있음을 강조했다는 점과, 둘째, 그들이 하나님이 세우신 교회의 질서를 부정하고 모든 사람이 성경을 가르칠 수 있다고 주장한다는 점을 지적한다. 재세례파의 이러한 이단적 주장에 맞서 드 브레는 성경만이 하나님의 계시의 유일한 수단이며 성령은 성경 외에 다른 것들을 계시하지 않는다고 반박한다. 또한, 하나님은 하나님이 세우신 합법적인 기관인 교회를 통해 말씀의 사역자를 세우시고 그를 통해 역사하신다는 사실을 강조한다.

Abstract

Guy de Brès (1522-1567), the author of the Belgic Confession, served the Reformed Churches in the Low Countries and composed several writings during his ministry. This paper aims to introduce one of De Brès’ works, La racine, source et fondement des anabaptistes, to Korean scholars for the first time. Another intent is to analyze why de Brès opposed the Anabaptists through the work. The Anabaptists occupied Münster by force in 1534. De Brès intended to show that the Anabaptists of the Low Countries in the 1560s originated from the violent Anabaptists 30 years ago. De Brès was aware of the fact that the magistrates were wary of the subversiveness of the Anabaptists. Therefore he constantly tried to show that the Reformed Churches in the Low Countries respected the authority of the magistrates, unlike the Anabaptists. In other words, there were political or practical reasons for his opposition to the Anabaptists. However, his book, La Racine, sheds light on the fundamental reason for his opposing the Anabaptists, which was their ‘heretical’ views on the Bible. To be specific, De Brès refuted the Anabaptists’ view that there could be other means of God’s revelation besides the Bible, such as dreams. Second, De Brès pointed out that the Anabaptists denied the order of the Church established by God and insisted that anyone could teach the Bible. De Brès argued that the Bible should be the sole means of God’s revelation and that the Holy Spirit does not reveal anything other than the Word of God. Also, he emphasized the fact that God establishes ministers of the Bible through the Church, a legitimate institution established by God, and works through them.
