Abstract
In the summer of 1566, shortly before the outbreak of the Dutch Revolt, a movement to remove images from churches swept across the Netherlands (the Low Countries). Coincidentally, the summer of the iconoclastic movement coincided with the first time Calvinist worship was allowed in the Low Countries. It was in response to the nobility’s dissatisfaction with Margaret, who ruled the Low Countries as regent, that the Calvinists of the region, long the target of persecution, were officially allowed to gather. In April 1566, several hundred lesser nobles traveled to the royal palace in Brussels to pressure the regent to relax her policy of religious persecution. This resulted in the first official permission for Calvinists to gather in the Low Countries, albeit limited to open-air preaching meetings. Against this backdrop, the number of Calvinists grew rapidly, and it was at this time that the iconoclastic movement broke out across the Low Countries. The extreme action of removing images from churches was seen as a threat to the stability of society. The iconoclast movement thus gave Regent Margaret a reason to repress Calvinists again. The nobility, who had opposed the policy of religious persecution, no longer had a reason to support the toleration of Calvinists. In this atmosphere, Calvinist leaders quickly distanced themselves from the iconoclasm, positioning it as an impulsive act by a few extremists and claiming it had nothing to do with the Calvinist Church. However, it is undeniable that Calvinists were behind the iconoclast movement. This paper will analyze the stance of a Low Countries Reformed minister towards the iconoclasm by examining the writings of Guy de Brès, one of the leaders of the Low Countries Reformed Church at the time. An understanding of what the members of the Low Countries Reformed Church were taught about images in the Church can be gained by looking at de Brès’ first book, Le Baston. This provides insight into his basic stance on images in the Church. His position on the issue during the iconoclasm of 1566 can be inferred from the political petition he wrote to the nobility on behalf of the Valenciennes Reformed congregation. This congregation was in danger of being suppressed in the name of rebellion in the winter of 1566. In this way, we hope to gain insight into the ambiguous and complex political and religious context of the Low Countries during the time of the iconoclasm.
