Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify knowledge of postnatal depression in postpartum women. Initial items were extracted from literature reviews related to postnatal depression and 21 items of postnatal depression knowledge tool were developed through contest validity by experts. Participants for verification of this scale were 111 postpartum women admitting at postpartum care centers of 2 obstetrics and gynecologic clinics in C and D cities. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA and scheffe's test using SPSS 23.0 program. The mean percentage of correct answers for postpartum depression knowledge was relatively high (74.3%), but some women had inadequate knowledge for onset, screening methods and treatment of postpartum depression. Postpartum depression knowledge was significantly higher in women who did not experience depression during pregnancy or who recognized the need for postpartum depression education. In order to prevent postpartum depression, accurate knowledge and information on postpartum depression should be provided to childbirth women. Especially, the time of postpartum depression onset, screening and treatment should be emphasized.
