Abstract

This study suggests secondary or collateral damages experienced by generations who did not directly suffer from the Gwangju Democracy Movement. The damages from traumatic incidences do not disappear but are transferred to the next generations within the social and cultural contexts. This study reveals that an ordinary citizen is connected with social trauma through the process of experiencing, perceiving, and living trauma. Recognizing the limitations of existing traumatic social diagnosis, this study suggests moral injury as a conceptual alternative to find the possibility of healing social trauma and reaching social integration. Moral injury is a psychological trauma that occurs when one experiences betrayal of what is right, a concept proposed by Dr. Shay who investigated the mental health of American veterans. Moral injury is meaningful for establishing a safe zone to stop discriminating between perpetrators, victims, and bystanders and to allow all related survivors to express narratives.
