Abstract
The purpose of the research is to show the influence of investor sentiment on the market's mean-variance tradeoff. In this paper, we use KOSPI, KOSPI50, KOSPI100, KOSPI200, LARGE INDEX, MEDIUM INDEX, and SMALL INDEX. These data are obtained from KRX(Korea Exchange) for the period January 1 2003 to December 30 2010. And we use GFI and VKOSPI as a investor sentiment index substitute. In the study volatility modes are rolling window model, GARCH and TGARCH. We find that the moments of returns and realized variance are different between the low and high sentiment regimes. This study shows that the mean-variance tradeoff is impacted by investor sentiment: High sentiment undermines an otherwise positive tradeoff. The empirical evidence is consistent with a large influence of sentiment traders during high-sentiment periods and the intuition that sentiment traders can undermine the risk-return tradeoff.
