Abstract
The S securities’ dividend accident was caused by a poor management of the computer system and a moral hazard among some employees of the stock brokerage firm. Moreover, this accident is regarded as a case supporting the abolition of the short-selling system. And this is a motivation on this study. This paper aims to investigate the payoff of short-selling investment strategies around the disclosure of ten major bad news. Our major findings are as follows. First, in the Korean stock market, the Percentage of foreign investors’ short-selling is 73.5%. Second, the profit of short-selling by our method is on average 1.58%, which is much smaller than 6.95% by the previous studies’ method. Third, there are many short-selling among four disclosures. Fourth, the Profit of foreign investors’ short-selling is higher than individual and institutional investors’. Fifth, the respective payoff of investors depends on both the disclosures and the market. This paper is the almost first research using the short-selling trading data. And this study shows that it takes about 7 days from short-sell to buy-back and the main factor on the payoff of short-selling is the information asymmetry. So it needs to reinforce the supervisory on the illegal use of insider informations.
