Abstract

This study focuses on the vertical categorization of CEO type. In contrast toprevious researches that categorized CEO type horizontally such as owner CEO,professional CEO, family CEO, etc., this research tries to vertically categorize CEOtype whether he or she has an upper rank boss or not. With this vertical categorizingconcept, we compared the differences between firms with upper rank boss aboveCEOs and those without them. This phenomenon is an unique one in Korea and existsin 41.21% of 2,567 Korean listed manufacturing firms. We investigated the difference between firms with upper rank boss above CEOsand those without them in firm-specific traits, strategic behaviors, and CEOsuccession. Firm size, profitability, advertising cost, donation were lager in firms withupper boss above CEOs than in firms without them. However, opposite result wasfound in growth rate. When there are upper rank bosses above CEOs, moreprofessional CEOs and more CEO successions were found. The analysis on types ofCEO succession followed. This research has an implication in that it explored to vertically categorize thetypes of CEOs differing from previous researches and in that it can broaden theresearch area on CEOs.
