Abstract
This study analyzes how profitability and cash flow persistence change as related party transactions increase. Specifically, related party transactions are classified into discretionary and fundamental, which are verified by the persistence of earnings on the accounting side and the cash flow persistence on the real cash side. As a result of the analysis, it was found that as the transaction of discretionary related parties increased, the profit persistence decreased, but it did not affect the cash flow persistence. This suggests that the transaction is likely to occur for earnings management purposes, rather than involving substantial cash, because the discretionary related party transaction occurred by management's discretion, On the other hand, as the fundamental related party transactions increase, the earnings persistence and cash flow persistence increase. It means that this transaction is not the arbitrary transaction to manage the accounting earnings but the real cash flow necessary for the business activity. In contrast to the fact that many studies dealing with related party transactions draw conclusions in one direction based on a conflict of interest hypothesis or an efficient transaction hypothesis, this study sought to examine both aspects of the related party transactions by subdividing them.
