Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine (a) the development of reading fluency of 5-year-old Korean children and (b) the influence of cognitive, personal and environmental factors that influence its development. A sample of 390 5-year-old children and their mothers participated for this study. The results showed that 86% of the 5-year-olds in the study could read sentences and they read average 115 Korean letters per minute. Correlational data showed that the earlier children were read to, the more money parents spent for buying children’s books, and the more their mother expected for children’s reading and writing, the more fluently children read. On the other hand, most of the cognitive factors were correlated with children’s reading fluency. Children read fluently when they could read words correctly, pay more attention, and know more words. The results from regression analysis indicated that nonword and low-frequent word reading, attention, forward and backward number repetition account for 62% of overall variance. Especially, nonword and low-frequency word reading had three times more contribution than other factors.
