Abstract
This study aimed to verify the mediating effect of social connectedness and the moderated mediating effect of dichotomous thinking in the relationship between boredom proneness and career adaptability of Korean college students. To this end, an online self-report survey was conducted with 318 male and female college students at domestic universities, using career adaptability, boredom proneness, social connectedness, and dichotomous thinking scales. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 29.0 and PROCESS Macro v4.2 programs. The results are as follows. First, boredom proneness had a negative effect on career adaptability. Second, social connectedness was found to partially mediate the relationship between boredom proneness and career adaptability. Third, dichotomous thinking significantly moderated the relationship between boredom proneness and social connectedness. Fourth, the mediating effect of social connectedness moderated by dichotomous thinking was significant, confirming the moderated mediation effect. These results suggest that dichotomous thinking may not merely represent a negative form of cognitive rigidity, but can also function as a defensive mechanism that helps maintain social connectedness when individuals experience high levels of boredom proneness. Furthermore, the findings highlight the need for psychological interventions that simultaneously alleviate boredom proneness and dichotomous thinking while enhancing social connectedness in order to promote career adaptability among college students. This study is significant in that it provides theoretical and practical foundational data for such interventions.
