Abstract

This paper is an attempt to show the sermons and sermon culture of the Church of England during the Restoration in the historical context. Building on the idea of secularisation, many scholars found sermons less important in early modern England than in previous centuries. Recent works, however, of early modern religion reveal the strength of religious language in the public sphere in seventeenth-century England, and demonstrate that traditional religion was one main hallmark of the period. Right after the Restoration, conformists preached a series of sermons to advocate divine kingship. From 1660 they were inclined to view succeeding political events as revelations of God’s providence. Providential interpretations continued to flow from sermons even during the reign of James II when the anti-popery sentiment came to the forefront of English consciousness. Conformists’ sermons were often adjusted to fit the current situation, while they were widely influential across the country. For the Established church sermons played a crucial role in propagating monarchical rule and reinforcing the ascendancy of the Church of England over dissenters.
