영국의 대표적 청교도들이며, 사제 간이기도 한 윌리엄 퍼킨스(W. Perkins)와 윌리엄 에임스(W. Ames)의 설교론을 일차 자료에 입각하여 인식하고, 비교 하며 역사적 이해를 시도함이 이 글의 목적이다. 종교개혁시대의 끝자락에 해당되는 16세기 중후반 영국 국교회와 17세기 네덜란드 개혁교회를 배경으 로 제시되는 두 사람의 설교이해는 당시의 상황과 신학을 그대로 담고 있다. 물론 두 사람이 캠브리지대학교에서 선생과 제자 그리고 동역자의 위치에 있었지만, 두 사람 사이에는 분명한 차이가 있는데, 그것은 종교개혁의 역동 적인 역사적 전개와 긴밀한 상관성이 있다. 두 사람은 18년이라는 길지 않은 나이차가 있음에도 격동의 시대 거기다 영국과 네덜란드의 종교개혁 신학, 특히 설교론에서 분명한 차이를 보여주고 있음을 확인하게 된다. 아울러 두 사람의 설교이해는 21세기 한국교회 설교강단에도 도전이 될 것인데, 설교 운동으로 일컬어지는 청교도의 생생한 음성을 들을 때이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this essay is to understand historically their perspective for preaching through W. Perkins and W. Ames’ writings. This will be accomplished by comparing and contrasting W. Perkins and W. Ames’ sermons. W. Perkins and W. Ames were leading Puritan reformers of the latter 16th Century Church of England and 17th century Netherland reformed church. Their writings are accurate reflections of their time and their church. Although they were coworkers at Cambridge University, there were distinguishable differences, specifically in the area of Church history. The two men were separated in age by 18 years, and show a considerable difference in English and Netherland’s homiletics of their times. Therefore, the 21st century Korean church will find worthy applications, bringing forth a fresh Christian perspective.
