Abstract

This study explores the effect of oxymoron copy advertising according to individual characteristics (need for closure and self-construal). The authors propose two hypotheses. Hypothesis 1 predicts that the impact of oxymoron copy advertising will be moderated by consumers' need for closure. Specifically, hypothesis 1 predicts that people with low need for closure will show better ad attitude toward oxymoron ads rather than non-oxymoron ads while people with high need for closure will show the similar ad attitude toward oxymoron ads with non-oxymoron ads. Next, hypothesis 2 predicts that the impact of oxymoron ads will be moderated by the self-construal. Specifically, hypothesis 2 predicts that people of interdependent self-construal will show better ad attitude toward oxymoron ads rather than non-oxymoron ads while people of the independent self-construal will show the similar ad attitude toward oxymoron ads with non-oxymoron ads. Using an empirical study, we verified that the impact of oxymoron ads was moderated by the need for closure and consumer’s self-construal tendency. This research has the important contributions on advertising literature through expanding the scope of the advertising literature. we verified the impact of oxymoron ads as an indirect persuasion tool. Specifically, the current research examines that oxymoron copy ads can be persuasive according to individual’ characteristics. That is, we revealed that message interpretation of oxymoron copy was influenced by individual’s need for closure and self-construal. The research offers advertising practitioners a few managerial implications. First, applying oxymoron copy in the ads can be a good strategy to get the attention from target customers. Second, advertising practitioners need to focus on people with the interdependent self-construal or the low need for closure for effective ad execution.
