Abstract
Recently, the advertising with rhetorical expressions which emphasizes verbal expressions rather than visual elements frequently appears in advertisements. Rhetorical expressions are divided into some types. This study focuses on the effect of oxymoron in advertising. Despite the widespread use of oxymoron in advertising by practitioners, the topic had received little attention from academic researchers. Moreover, research on rhetorical expressions of advertising has been focused on metaphor and resonance advertising. Therefore, this study attempts to empirically examine how a consumer's regulatory focus (prevention/promotion focus) moderates the effect of oxymoron in advertising on consumer evaluation. The results indicate that the promotion-focused consumers evaluate an oxymoron advertisement more positively than a general one. The prevention-focused consumers, on the other hand, evaluate a general advertisement more positively than an oxymoron one. This study has its theoretical contributions in that it tries to conceptualize the oxymoron advertising and extends research on the effect of oxymoron in advertising. From a managerial perspective, the current research provides useful guidelines for marketers to be responsible for designing the oxymoron advertising.
