프랑스 다문화교육의 배경과 쟁점

초록

이 논문은 프랑스 다문화교육의 역사적, 사회적 배경과 쟁점을 살펴보고 한국사회에서 화두가 되고 있는 다문화교육에의 시사점을 찾으려는 시도로 연구되었다. ‘문화 간 교육(Education interculturelle)’으로 통칭되는 프랑스 다문화교육은 다문화적 감수성으로 민주적 이상을 확인하며, 인간과 삶의 복수성을 받아들이고 인지하는 것을 목표로 하는 교육적 행위로 정의된다. 이러한 프랑스 다문화교육의 방향성은 다름과 공존의 지구촌 시대의 시민을 길러내는 것을 목표로 하는 세계 시민교육의 성격을 지닌다. 따라서 다양성으로의 개방, 기회 균등과 평등, 사회적 통합이라는 기치 아래 이루어지는 프랑스의 다문화교육은, 다문화적 감수성을 바탕으로 비판적 성찰능력의 증진을 통해, 나와 타자와의 관계를 설정하는 시민교육이라고 할 수 있다. 이처럼 다름과 공존의 삶에 대한 인식의 인프라 구축에 중점을 두고 있는 프랑스 다문화교육은 다른 사회의 사례로 한국 다문화교육의 방향성을 모색하는 데 의미를 지닐 수 있을 것이다.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to consider the implications of multicultural education in France for Korea, in light of the fact that multicultural education in Korea has recently become an important social and educational issue with the changes in Korea’s position in the national and global context. In France where it is called “intercultural education (Education interculturelle)” the goal of multicultural education is to affirm democratic principles through sensitivity to multiculturalism, to recognize and accept the diversity of people and life. It is guided by the principles of openness, equal opportunity and justice, and social unity. As such education on multiculturalism is an intimate part of the civic education programs in school. Multicultural education in France is not about paternalistic sympathy for minorities or simply learning about other cultures; it is about advancing the capacity for critical thinking and reflection, and about reconstructing the relationship between ‘I’ and the ‘other’ through such critical reflection; it is an educational approach based on the principle of mutual equality. In particular, multicultural education in France focuses on building ‘perceptive infrastructure’ for differences and co-existence. In this regard, in terms of both content and direction, I believe the French example has much to offer to the inchoate multicultural education programs in Korea.
