초록

The maritime dimension is crucial to the security of Northeast Asia. The geopolitics of the region has caused regional participants to confront major conventional and non-conventional maritime security challenges. Particularly, the attention should be given to on-going maritime territorial disputes. Northeast Asia faces three main contested maritime territories: Russian-Japanese dispute over the Kuril Islands, Chinese-Japanese-Taiwanese claims over the Senkaku Islands and Korean-Japanese ones over the Dok Islands. The disputes are entangled with regional states’ political, strategic and economic issues and their active strategy and growing assertiveness in the maritime dimension encourage the disputes to be dynamic. These territorial disputes are a constant factor in exacerbating the regional security environment. Other regional security challenges are negatively promoted or catalyzed by the disputes over the islands, whose role could be used as a pretext or a flashpoint for further confrontations. In turn, the influenced factors develop the intensity of the disputes. The maritime territorial disputes in Northeast Asia would be a dangerous flashpoint to create more negative and destructive turmoil to the regional security environment without more positive and pacifying management of regional powers.
