Abstract
The Hyangsang(向上) Center began social projects by advocating 'improvement' of Joseon society in terms of mental and material aspects through 'Buddhist spirit' and 'technical education(授産)'. It was based on the recognition of cultivating 'human resources' necessary for the colonial country through functional education on poverty control in determining that vocational education for training workers is suitable for Koreans. In 1924, a Improvement Women's Technology School was established in the center to conduct vocational education for women. The improvement social project gradually shifted its weight to 'women' vocational education as differences in perceptions and realistic conflicts between the operating entity and the trainee were exposed. In 1936, it was accredited as an Enhanced Women's vocational School and incorporated into the secondary education system in earnest, and the social projects of improvement were centered on 'educational projects'. In addition, the character of 'Japanese women's education' and 'Buddhist women's training' was strengthened and embodied. In that it is a private Japanese school in Seoul and a school for Korean women run by a Buddhist foundation, the Hyangsang Girls' School has a unique position in the history of women's education during the colonial period. Improvement focused on vocational education suitable for the people of Joseon and technical education necessary as a 'wife who can take care of the family'. In this respect, there was a difference from the Christian women's education rooted in the 'cultivation of Western-style Christian women leaders'. In addition, the theory of women's liberation, such as liberation through economic independence of women commonly emphasized in Korean-run vocational schools, does not appear on the surface in education of improvement.
