Abstract

In contemporary Japanese, the conditional form can be classified as either theordinary conditional form (such as ‘-nara(ba)’, ‘-tanara(ba)’, ‘-tara’, ‘(-e/re) ba’,‘-to’) or the concessive conditional form (such as ‘-temo’, ‘-noni’, ‘-tatte’), dependingon the relation between the subordination sentence and main sentence. Mitemo, which is the concessive conditional form of the vision verb miru ‘see’,is usually used to concessively connect the subordination sentence to the mainsentence. In addition to this type of main verb usage, there is also a well-knownderivational usage. Currently available studies, however, rarely discuss the specificpractices of this derivational usage. In response, this study aims to describe the specific forms of mitemo in instancesof derivational usage and identify the particular meanings and usages of each of theseforms. The process by which mitemo loses its characteristic as a main verb is accompaniedby the loss of its lexical meaning and the loss of its morphological and syntacticcharacteristics. The meaning specifically referring to visual activity becomesabstracted. It does not function as the predication of the subordination sentence anddoes not undergo inflection corresponding to voice, aspect, or polarity. It also losesits independence as a word, and is instead attached to other specific words. There are two directions that the derivation of mitemo can take. First, it can beused as a postposition that modifies the perspective of evaluation or judgment andmodifies the base. Secondly, it can be used as sentence adverb that conveys the attitudeof the speaker regarding the contents of what he/she states.
