Abstract
This paper compared 396 examples of glossed reading as verbs and 253 examples of glossed reading as nouns in Lunyu Jijie (LYJJ) vol. 1 to the translated words of Korean annotation of Lunyu written by Toegye (TGLY). Among verbs, 349 are native words, about 88% of the total, and 47 are Chinese words, about 12% of the total. Among the 253 examples of nouns, native words account for 63% of the total in 160 examples, and Chinese words account for 37% of the total in 93 examples. As we can see, the ratio of native words in LYJJ is seven times higher than that of the former, and almost twice as high as that of the latter. In the case of TGLY, native words account for 40% of the total in 156 examples of verbs, and Chinese words account for 60% of the total in 236. In noun examples, naitve words account for about 35% of the total in 89 cases, and Chinese words account for 64% of the total in 161 cases. Compared to LYJJ, the proportion of Chinese words is relatively high. The reason for this is that TGLY chose Chinese characters to help remind the Chinese characters of the original text, but is mainly due to when reading Chinese, they can be attributed to different syllable structural features from Japanese, which have homonym confusion. On the other hand, in glossed reading of Chinese text, the simplicity of the syllable structure interfered with the recall of the original text, or the translation into native words may have been advantageous because the Chinese characters were settled not only as phonetic but also in glossed reading. About 55% of the two documents have a verb example and a noun example in terms of word type, while the other 45% have a difference. In particular, 189 of the verbs read as native words in LYJJ are interpreted as kanji in TGLY, and the main form is ‘kanji word + do(ᄒᆞ다)’. In addition, the part of speech of the verb example and the noun example of the two materials match in 93%.
