초록
This paper examines properties of word order constraints of multiple negative polarity item (hereafter, NPI) constructions in Japanese. Past studies argue that Japanese NPIs such as shika 'only', dare-mo/nani-mo/dokoni-mo 'anyone/anything/anywhere', kessite 'never' can occur in the same negative clause. However, the previous studies have never investigated any syntactic word order constraints of multiple NPI constructions. In fact, the Japanese multiple NPI constructions have the following word order constraints;(i) shika must precede nani-mo when shika occurs with nani-mo in the same clause. This paper argues that the reason why Japanese multiple NPI constructions have the constraint like (i) is because of syntactic scope of shika. The syntactic scope of shika can be described in (ii) below. (ii) The syntactic scope of shika is decided in outside VP. Nani-mo is the only NPI which appears in inside VP among Inderterminate-mos. That is why nani-mo cannot precede shika, while the other NPIs such as dare-mo/dokoni-mo which appear in outside VP can.
