초록

The argument of this paper is two-fold. First, the meaning of multiple negative polarity item constructions (multiple NPI constructions) in Japanese is distinct when the NPIs appear in the adjunct positions, whereas one of multiple NPI constructions is ambiguous when the NPIs do in the argument positions. In other words, the former has a single meaning, while the latter does two different meanings. Second, syntactic positions of NPIs are the most significant factor when it comes to the meaning of multiple NPI constructions in Japanese. Much has been said on Japanese multiple NPI constructions for the past decades, mostly with emphasis on syntactic licensing condition. Some of the previous proposals, however, have been regarded as somewhat suspicious as far as the meanings they deal with is concerned. In this paper, under the assumption that the meanings of Japanese multiple NPI constructions must be thoroughly investigated to find the syntacto-semantic properties of NPIs in the multiple NPI constructions. I attempt to re-examine the meanings of Japanese multiple NPI constructions frequently discussed in the Japanese linguistics literature. In doing so, I conducted the informant interview. I interviewed 50 Japanese informants who are majored in linguistics. The results of my informant interview based research implicate that some previous proposals concerning meanings of Japanese multiple NPI constructions must be reconsidered due to the incorrect observations of the data or the complete lack of the data.
