Abstract

This study presents a contrastive analysis of hortative remarks in Japanese and Korean with special reference to the linguistic forms of non-executive act. In Japanese, ‘ruhogaii’ and ‘tahogaii’ are used in the form of executive act, while the four kinds of the form are used in Korean. However, the form for non-executive act is used in one form called ‘naihogaii’ in Japanese, while a variety of plural forms is used such as ‘ci anneun pyeoni natta’ ‘ci anneun geosi natta’ ‘ci anneun pyeoni cotta’ ‘ci anneun geosi cotta’ in Korean. Each form represents a subtly different mental attitude of the speaker. Semantic differences between these forms emerge due to the following factors: the consciousness of comparison and selection, the attitude of attributing the grounds of judgment to general social norms, the attitude of taking responsibility to utter by accepting the result of judgment, the positive attitude for hortation. Based on these factors, the present paper attempts to reveal the semantic differences of each form. Therefore, ‘naihogaii’ possesses diverse meaning functions found in the corresponding forms in Korean, and it can be referred to as a deontic modality form with a range of semantic functions.
