Abstract
This study presents an investigation into the tale development patterns of Korea and Japan based on the motif of Nursing Queen Maya, the Jataka of Sakyamuni. In Konzakumonogatarishu, a Japanese collection of tales, the tale of Madam Noknyeo whose origin is in Buddhist scriptures developed in two patterns of story: one is about the queen that was born as a daughter of deer, became a queen, and gave abnormal birth to an egg or lotus flower; and the other is about the discarded sons that grew up in an enemy country and demonstrated their parent-child relationships through the nursing of Madam Noknyeo, their biological mother, in a war against their mother country. In Korea, the concerned content was found in Seokbosangjeol, a Buddhist literary work during Joseon, with its origin in Boeungyeong. There are the tale of Madam Nokjok that focused on the deer feet in North Korea and The Daughter of the Roe orally transmitted in the Honam region. While the former focused on the story behind the name of the place through her reunion with her discarded son, the latter conveyed a more complete version of the content in the Buddhist literature by covering both the former and latter part of the story. The study finds its significance in that it raised a need to recall the meanings of Korea's tale of Madam Nokjok as Buddhist literature by comparing it with the tale of Madam Noknyeo of Japan for development. In Japan, there are the birth story of Empress Koumyou and the origin story of Izumi Shikibu's tabi that have been transmitted with respect to the deer feet and tabi, which are the main motifs of the tale of Madam Nokjok, which should be addressed in future comparative study.
