Abstract

The purpose of this study is to prove the positive effects of Japanese listening comprehension classes by utilizing media suitable for the level of learners in connection with various teaching media tools and to make suggestions on classes efficiency. In order to achieve this goal, a survey on the listening comprehension classes utilizing media was conducted among 20 students of the advanced, intermediate, and beginner level after class, and the conclusions were as follows: Firstly, it is considered important to use resources and materials appropriate to the learners’ level in the Japanese listening comprehension classes. Thus, while using media as teaching materials, it is necessary to select work considering the learner’s level. For learners at an advanced level, any materials from dramas, animations, and movies, maybe fully utilized as teaching materials, and the use of a variety of genres also helps improve the listening comprehension skills. However, when selecting a work for learners at the intermediate or beginners level, it is important to select a genre appropriate for their level, especially for beginners; it is required to carefully select a work with characters with a moderate locution and an understandable pronunciation. Secondly, with respect to conducting classes, differentiating the method of conducting the classes by level rather than giving a uniform lesson, was found to have induced interest and led to an improvement of skills. As shown in the survey results, it is necessary to plan the lessons while taking into consideration when to use dictation and subtitles for each level of classes and what kinds of assignments are considered effective, as it improves interest in listening comprehension classes and increases confidence in the Japanese language.
