Abstract
When writing an article, many writers are influenced by the customs and environment of the cultural circle in which they are placed. In particular, in the case of personal and impersonal expressions, Korean and Japanese researchers are instructed to use impersonal expressions such as “本 (hon ‘This’) + research subject” rather than the first person as much as possible, and many researchers are aware of this. However, there have been very few studies that have clarified what kind of expressions are actually used as well as their usage patterns and trends. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to clarify the aspects of the use of personal and impersonal expressions in Japanese and Korean articles, especially in their introductory part. The analysis of this study revealed that impersonal expressions, especially “本 (Hon) + research subject,” were the most common among impersonal, first-person, and plural first-person expressions in both Japan and Korea. However, among “本 (Hon) + research subject” in Japan, “本稿 (Honko)” was the most common, whereas “本研究 (Honkenkyu)” was used more frequently in Korean papers. In addition, Korean articles used “この (Kono + research subject)” significantly more often than Japanese papers, and Japanese papers used more plural first-person expressions such as “我々 (Wareware)” than Korean papers. These results indicate that the use of personal and impersonal expressions differs between Japanese and Korean papers. These results are expected to serve as basic data for Korean and Japanese language education, especially in the teaching of composition.
