Abstract
Compound words that contain “kuse” are “kuseni” and “kuseshite”, which can be attached to conjugated words or to the particle “no” that connects to a noun. Also, they can be used as conjunction particles and sentence-final particles. In this survey, a total of 14 examples of “kuseni” were collected from classical texts, including 11 examples as conjunction particles and three examples as sentence-final particles, however, “kuseshite” was not observed. In modern Japanese, “kuseni” is often used in conversational texts, but it is also used to describe situations. All of the examples collected from classical texts are used in dialogues in criticizing or despising the other person. In this survey, the first appearance of “kuseni” was extracted from Ihara Saikaku’s Ukiyo-zoshi work “Koshoku Ichidai Onna”. It is used as a conjunction particle in the form “-no kuneni”. In the usage of “kuneni” to connect a noun, “no” has been used since 1686, which shows that it was used about 120 years earlier than currently recognized as the first appearance. “Kuseni” as a conjunction particle is confirmed in “Harutsugetori” and it is approximately 26 years earlier than previous research shows. It is used in the same way as modern Japanese usage, such as not being able to be used with natural phenomena or inanimate subjects and not being able to be used in the first person. This shows that it was already established and used as a compound word at that time.
