Abstract
In the case of MZ generation's Japanese learning methods, the use of ‘video platforms and smart apps’(n=17 (23%)) and language exchange apps (n=17 (23%)) were high. The use of language exchange apps went beyond relationships within the apps and led to local contact in each country. For that reason, this study was intended to investigate personal behavior of physical contact among South Korean and Japanese college students to help understand expressions of friendship and messages of vigilance. 1. In the case of mouth-related contact (sharing straws, water bottles), South Korean male students (n=13 (52%)), South Korean female students (n=14 (56%)), and Japanese female students (n=13 (52%)) were somewhat predominant in negative responses. They view contact with friends as an act based on relationships (intimacy, trust, and bond). In particular, Japanese female students appear to be vigilance-oriented (a sense that contact is possible with close friends). Japanese male students (20 (80%)) appeared to be avoidance-oriented (avoidance of contact with other people than family members and unhygienic people). 2. In the case of hand-related contact (holding hands, crossing arms, putting arms around one’s shoulder), putting arms around one’s shoulder was mainly experienced by South Korean male students (n=23(92%)). South Korean male students appear to be contact-oriented (expressing bonds with friends). 3. In the case of foot-related contact (wearing socks), South Korean male students, South Korean female students, and Japanese female students accept the sharing of things with friends positively. 4. In the case of space use, in proximity to people they thought had a higher status (professor) than them, Korean female students appeared to be distance securing-oriented (a tendency to secure sufficient distance) in spaces with people with whom they had a status relationship, and Japanese female students appeared to be gaze avoidance-oriented (a tendency to avoid eye contact). Nonverbal messages and emotions expressed by people from one culture have different meanings to people from another culture. Words per se may be meaningless, but behavior patterns other than words may be much more effective in conveying the other person's emotions. It is hoped that South Korean and Japanese college students will understand the individual behavior and culture of communication to smoothly continue friendships and caring relationships.
