『니쉬빠나요가발리』의 싼쓰끄리뜨 텍스트에 관한 고찰

본 연구는 인도와 티베트불교의 만다라를 연구하는 데 있어서 가장 중요한 자료의 하나인 아바야까라굽따의 명저『니쉬빠나요가발리』의 싼쓰끄리뜨 텍스트를 재교정하는 데 있어서 무엇이 적합한 방법론인가를 고찰함과 동시에, 그에 수반되는 몇몇 문제점들을 검토하는 데 그 목적이 있다.『니쉬빠나요가발리』는 인도의 유명한 불교 학자이자 싼쓰끄리뜨 학자였던 베노이토쉬 바타차랴에 의해 처음으로 교정되어 1949년 출판되었다. 그러나 바타차랴의 싼쓰끄리뜨 교정본은 그 선구자적 업적에도 불구하고 수백 개의 틀린 읽기들을 포함하고 있다. 따라서 아바야까라굽따가 저술한 원래의『니쉬빠나요가발리』는 바타차랴가 교정한 싼쓰끄리뜨 텍스트와 전혀 다르다고 말하더라도 과언이 아니다. 그 후 일본과 서구의 몇몇 학자들이『니쉬빠나요가발리』의 몇몇 만다라들에 대해 비판적 싼쓰끄리뜨 교정본을 출판해왔지만, 여전히 많은 틀린 읽기들을 포함하고 있다. 바타차랴와 몇몇 학자들의 싼쓰끄리뜨 텍스들이 많은 결점들을 갖고 있는 데에는 근본적으로 다음과 같은 세 가지의 문제점들이 있다. 첫째는 가장 오래된 싼쓰끄리뜨 사본이 이용 불가능했거나, 아니면 이용했더라도 그 중요성을 살리지 않고 오로지 ‘계통적 방법’을 사용했다는 점이다. 둘째는 『니쉬빠나요가발리』의 3종의 서로 다른 티베트어 번역들의 중요성을 살리지 못했다는 점이다. 셋째는 아바야까라굽따가『니쉬빠나요가발리』를 저술할 때 참고한 많은 전거들을 확인하지 않고, 활용하지 않았다는 점이다. 그러나 필자는 이 세 가지 문제점들을 고려, 보충해서 2004년『니쉬빠나요가발리』의 26개 만다라 전부의 비판적 싼쓰끄리뜨 교정본을 성공적으로 끝낼 수 있었다. 따라서 본 연구의 Ⅱ부터 Ⅳ까지는 위의 세 가지 문제점들을 하나씩 검토하고 있다. 그런 뒤 Ⅴ에서는 교정시 고려해야 하는 몇몇 언어학적 문제들을 다루고 있다.
Abstract
The Sanskrit text of the Niṣpannayogāvalī (NPY) of mahapaṇḍita Abhayākaragupta was initially critically edited by Benoytosh Bhattacharyya and subsequently published in 1949. It has proved to be a mine of information on Buddhist iconography along with the Sādhanamālā since its publication. The NPY includes more than a thousand deities, many of which have Hindu origins. the NPY, however, is in itself a text par excellence for exploring bhāvyamaṇḍalas (visualized maṇḍalas) because it prescribes with great precision how to visualize the most representative maṇḍalas of late Indian Buddhism. It complements the Vajrāvalī (VA), the magnum opus of Abhayākaragupta, by supplying the three-dimensional maṇḍalas with a "condensed essence" (saṃkṣiptasāra). Abhayākaragupta prescribes in the VA how to draw the two-dimensional lekhyamaṇḍalas (drawn maṇḍalas), whereas he instructs in the NPY how to visualize the three-dimensional bhāvyamaṇḍalas as their mental counterparts. Thus, these two works can serve together as a standard for exploring the maṇḍala, the basis of tantric rituals. Moreover, the intrinsic value of the NPY has become all the greater due to the unavailability of most of the original Sanskrit texts which used to describe various maṇḍalas. Although Bhattacharyya"s edition has made the NPY popular in Western Indology and Buddhology, it suffers from many incorrect readings. Thus, despite Bhattacharyya"s pioneering role deserving of high praise, his edition is inadequate to the present scholarly standard. There seem to be three major reasons for the defects of Bhattacharyya"s edition: First, a Sanskrit MS of good quality was not at his disposal, since he used only three Sanskrit MSS, all of which were copied in the nineteenth century; second, Bhattacharrya did not utilize any of the three Thibetan versions of the NPY; third, the (direct) sources for the NPY were not identified and thus not utilized. Since a correction of these problems was of utmost importance for a new critical edition of the NPY, my basic principles of re-editing the NPY were naturally guided accordingly. My critical edition of the Sanskrit text of the NPY, for which five Sanskrit MSS and the three Tibetan versions had been used, was initially published in 2003 for a very limited readership, and its revised version was subsequently published in 2004. Thus, in view of my new critically edited Sanskrit text of the NPY, this article discusses textual problems in re-editing the NPY and proposes their possible solutions.
