Abstract
The economic reforms of India that began in 1991 brought a set of challenges as well as opportunities for the corporate sector in India. Our concern here is to see how big business responded to the challenges and opportunities. We take a look at the family controlled big business’ response to the changed milieu. We take a closer look at three cases. One has a history of over a century behind it and was extremely diversified. The second was born about four decades back but made an impact just about three decades back and since then has seen spectacular growth and performance while remaining extremely focused on a narrow core competency area. While these two are from the old economy, the third is from the new economy and is not family controlled. Although over two decades old, the third entity came into its own in the last decade. We look at how these three contrasting cases coped with the new environment and draw conclusions.
