Abstract

This paper examines the process of establishment of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce by Indian merchants during the period 1887-1904 and the trajectory of its main activities in the early years. The late 1800s was a period of great change not only in the political sphere, but also in the economic sphere, as the British began to directly rule India. In particular, the Bengal Chamber of Commerce, the first modern economic organization established in India in 1834, had the primary goal of exclusively protecting the interests of British merchants, effectively eliminating competition from Indian merchants, and exerting a strong influence on the colonial government's policies related to trade and commerce. The Bengal National Chamber of Commerce, founded in Calcutta on February 2, 1887, basically had the organizational type of the British organization. Although it had a subservient character, which obeyed the system and sought its own survival within the given framework, a nationalistic character that clearly distinguished it from the British-dominated Bengal Chamber of Commerce. Bengal National Chamber of Commerce, from its inception, limited its membership to Indian merchants. Maintaining close ties with the leaders of the Indian National Congress, it worked tirelessly to counter the discriminatory political, economic, and administrative policies of the British colonial government. The leaders of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce realized early on that without official recognition by the colonial government, the main objective of the Chamber could not be satisfactorily achieved, so they focused on the issue of securing representation for the Indian merchant community on the various committees set up by the colonial government. The struggle for the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce to be recognized by the colonial government as an official organization representing the Indian merchant community was an effort to represent the interests of Indian merchants against the British, and was part of the Indian nationalist movement to achieve independence of India. By the early 1900s, the colonial government could no longer ignore the opinions of the highly organized Indian merchant community, and various public institutions were clearly aware of the need to give Indian merchant groups adequate representation and consult them closely on important legislative and administrative measures. It is important to note, however, that the initial struggle to create such a social climate was for a long time carried out solely by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce. In this context, the most important significance of the establishment of the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce is that it was the starting point for exploring the role of business organizations during the period of the emergence of economic nationalism in India.
