분석 대상은 정치 성향을 고려하여 한국의 『한겨레』(진보)와 『조선일보』(보수), 미국의 『The New York Times』(진보)와 『The Wall Street Journal』(보수)로 선정하였다.
Abstract
This study aims to analyze differences in news framing and reporting practices by comparing photo coverage of the 2024 60th U.S. presidential election in major Korean and American newspapers. The analysis subjects were selected considering political orientation: Korea's Hankyoreh (progressive) and Chosun Ilbo (conservative), and the U.S.'s The New York Times (progressive) and The Wall Street Journal (conservative). The cross-analysis revealed that differences based on the political orientation of the media were more pronounced than differences between countries. Progressive-leaning newspapers in both Korea and the U.S. commonly preferred the interest frame, while conservative-leaning newspapers focused their coverage on the factuality and relationality frames. Notably, The New York Times placed a high emphasis on the interest frame in its Trump coverage, reflecting the tendency of progressive media to prioritize emotional engagement and narrative elements. Conversely, The Wall Street Journal and The Chosun Ilbo maintained fact-centered reporting emphasizing policy outcomes and official statements. Furthermore, while the U.S. prioritized the independence and immediacy of photojournalism, Korea exhibited an editorial practice of using photographs as supplements to text articles. This study empirically confirmed that visual news frames are shaped more strongly by media ideological orientation than by national differences.
