초록

A Study on the Visual Frame of the Photojournalism on the ferry Sewol sinking The public views the world through the window of the media. That is why it is so important for the press to play its part in investigating facts and forming fair public opinion. This research compared news photos on the ferry Sewol, published by the JoongAng Ilbo, Korea’s leading moderate conservative paper, and the Hankyoreh, a leading liberal paper in Korea. I reviewed all photos from news reports related to the Sewol that were published by the JoongAng Ilbo and the Hankyoreh for six months from April 17, 2014, the day after the ferry sinking, until Oct. 17, 2014. I conducted frame content analysis with personal experiences on the scenes and direct information in reference to previous researches. I studied to find out whether there were any meaningful differences when the photographs chosen by the two papers were compared. This research employed analysis of variance to analyze the news photographs and applied a framing analytical tool to conduct content analysis on all the photos published in the two newspapers. This research is meaningful in that it included a comprehensive comparative analysis through use of a frame content analysis tool to figure out what kind of information the newspapers want to deliver. Additionally, it shows what the newspapers try to sell to readers with what kind of attitude when a moderate conservative newspaper and a liberal newspaper report news photos about a national disaster such as the ferry Sewol sinking.
