초록
This paper investigates the nature of /h/ in Japanese, and its adaptation pattern in Korean for the loanwords contexts. There are mainly two types of adaptation for the English /f/ in Korean loanwords, depending on the original source. Firstly, it is a direct adaptation from English. Secondly, speakers are also influenced by the indirect adaptation through Japanese. So we argue that the mapping between English /f/ and /h/ in Korean is due to Japanese phonemic constraints. Moreover, this kind of Anglo-Japanese influences the use of /h/ for the younger generations of Korean speakers, as well as older generations, although there is a much closer sound, i.e. /ph/, in Korean. Most importantly we also argue that the framework for the loanword phonology is not sufficient to explain the data which is related to the history of a certain language in question.
