초록

In the present study a detailed discussion concerning English loanwords in Korean is made. Specifically, this paper surveys the English fricative sounds borrowed into the Korean system. The English loanwords with the eight English fricatives are analyzed and various interpretations by Korean speakers are examined. Moreover, this paper attempts to examine the reasons behind the various interpretations of English fricatives when borrowed into Korean system. Korean speakers use different strategies to "overcome" the impoverished fricative sounds in Korean. This study also claims that the loanword data can provide a good piece of evidence for the research of the initial stage in an L2 acquisition situation. A further investigation into the loanword phonology will shed light to the L2 acquisition research.

This study also claims that the loanword data can provide a good piece of evidence for the research of the initial stage in an L2 acquisition situation. A further investigation into the loanword phonology will shed light to the L2 acquisition research.
