초록
This paper discusses PRO in wh-islands and complex NP islands. PRO is analysed as small pro in these nonfinite constructions in GB approach but as D/NP-movement in the minimalist framework proposed by Hornstein(2001). If a movement approach is right, obligatory control can be absorbed in Chomsky's prime principle, move(copy and merge). In this paper, it is proposed that obligatory control stops wh-element(s) from moving across islands to a matrix clause. This is because the relation between obligatory and nonobligatory control is sensitive to island effect. In other words, wh-element cannot use the position [SPEC, FinP] if obligatory controlled DP moves to a matrix clause via [SPEC, FinP] in the sense of Barrie(2007). I further argue that Barrie's approach can be extended to another wh-construction, infinitive relative clauses.
