Abstract

A Study of Art Program for the Aged Hyunjoo Kim The purpose of this study is to pursue the practical ways in art education for the aged by developing art programs for the aged suited to our society. To develop the art programs, the concept of the aged is defined first and then the ways for practical art education are discussed. Also, the worth of the art programs for the aged is examined in terms of leisure and an artistic remedy. Through this discussion, a new art program for the aged is suggested, based on lifelong education and Tyler's (1949) education model. The master plan of the art program is established after demands on art education from the old learners are analyzed. To set up the purpose of the program, philosophical, social and individual views involved in the program are summarized. In addition, the basics of the contents and the teaching methods of the program are suggested in the light of the characteristics of the aged and the analysis of their needs and interest. Finally, the way of the assesment of learning results is proposed based on the goal of the program. As part of lifelong art education, the program is organized to emphasize the old learners' independent knowledge and operant learning, with contents based on real life and assesment focused on the learners. Furthermore, the plans to improve the art education are suggested in three domains; development of various art programs, training of specialists in the programs, and increase of the government’s support for developing the programs.
