Abstract
This study investigates Koreans' English prosodic characteristics. Fourteen female Korean speakers and twelve female native English speakers: seven for an acoustic experiment and five for an perceptual experiment participate. First part of this study examines the acoustic parameters of fundamental frequency, amplitude, and duration. To this end, it employs the Pratt 4.0, sound effect analysis program. In the second part of the study, accent position, intonation patterns, rhythm patterns and phrasing as spoken by Koreans in the perceptual experiment are evaluated by the five native English adjudicators. The data reveal that Koreans' pitch and intensity on the back part of the sentences are lower and weaker than those of English speakers. Furthermore, the statistical evidence with regard to intensity and duration also tends to indicate that there are significant differences among the two groups (intensity: F=4.208, p=0.03, duration: F=3.733, p=0.04).
