Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to declare what drives movement. On the basis of many peculiar properties of the Generalized EPP, many scholars have attempted to derive the EPP effect from other independent principles. Recently, Bokovi(2007) proposes that all movement is driven by a formal inadequacy (an uninterpretable feature like Case) of the moving element, not by an EPP feature. However, the proposal that an element with an uninterpretable feature has to move to the Spec of the feature licensor cannot be maintained in all the cases. We cannot accept the proposal because there are some constructions where movement does not occur in spite of an uninterpretable feature. With several theoretical and empirical considerations, I conclude that an EPP property is still the most adequate description about the trigger of all movement including successive cyclic movement and final steps of movement, even though there still remains a problem of declaring what the EPP property is
