Abstract

When we think about words, we usually set out to answer the questions such as how humans manage to store so many words, and how they find the ones they want, discussing the nature of the human word-store, or mental lexicon which is both large and complex (Aitchison 1996). Word association experiments might reveal some ways of the human word-store and so could explain our mental lexicon (Read 1993). That's why word association tests have been used frequently so far and the commonest response of the tests has been applied to the effective vocabulary teaching. The results of word association test suggest that words are organized semantically, which leads to semantic networks. By implementing this result (Hudson 1995; Jullian 2000; Celik 2003; Jiang 2000; Channell 1990), this paper, under the word association framework, tries to find more effective vocabulary teaching, relating L1 to L2 and vice versa (Carter and McCarthy 1988).
