초록

From the early Generative Grammar, the English Passive construction has been mostly discussed because of its grammatical complexity, including mechanisms for both object promotion and subject demotion. These two mechanisms were explained on the basis of Case theory, which requires de-Casing of direct object and de-thematization of subject. The Case-driven account of passivization, however, faces a problem in the recent Minimalist syntax where Case assignment is dissociated from movement. The theoretical necessity for a reanalysis of the passive and an empirical evidence of the accusative Case availability in passive draw our attention to the other side of mechanisms, resulting in a proposal i.e. the existence of an external argument in passive contrary to the previous assumption. Besides this paper proposes a Passive Phrase (PassP) which selects a special vP with a pro external argument.
