초록
This paper aims to account for the structure of English passive constructions within both Minimalist theory and functional-pragmatic theory. In functional- pragmatic theory we can lead to the conclusion that the subject of passive constructions is a topic, not a subject. In Minimalist theory the subject of passive constructions is placed in a position generated from split projection of CP, while the subject of active constructions is placed in Spec of TP. Although it is generally accepted that the topic is situated in CP, in this paper I argue that the landing site of a topic is not in CP but in TP. To be specific, if we accept Park(1996)'s Outer Spec-Head Agreement(OSHA), the topic is situated in SPEC of TP, Outer SPEC of TP. If there is no need for a topic to move to CP over TP for its landing site, the topic in SPEC of TP comes out of an analysis based on the Minimalist theory, I can assert. Furthermore, SPEC of TP has the advantage to provide landing sites of elements placed between C(omplementizer) and Spec of TP that we examined through Korean, English, and Polish examples.
