초록
This paper investigates the derivation of English middle constructions. The aim of the paper is to offer a theoretical account of the formation of English Middle Constructions within the Minimalist Program. Middle Constructions are often claimed to involve Agent demotion and Patient/Theme promotion. In Middle Constructions, for instance, the grammatical subject is considered to be an underlying object and the underlying subject to be seemingly absent. This paper argues that middle verbs syntactically project both internal and external arguments of their active counter parts. Unlike other researches, however, those arguments are projected to the universally pre-defined positions; the framework adopted in the paper demonstrates that neither demotions nor promotions introduced previously are necessary to describe the derivation of the two arguments: the existence of subject and object arises solely from the general structure suggested here, which contains T(ense) and Voi(ce).. To this end, we adopted and modified Bowers’ approach(2002, 2004, 2010) which is also based on Chomsky’s minimalist program(1995, 2000, 2001).
