Abstract
Improving asymmetry of weight bearing and functional activity is major treatment goal for stroke patients. This study aims to determine effects of actual practice and mental practice on weight shifting and functional ability. For this study, 32 stroke patients were allocated into four groups, actual practice(n=8), mental practice(n=8), actual + mental practice(n=8) and control group(n=8). Actual practice group received balance training using force plate with visual information, metal practice group was asked to imagine the task without movement and actual + mental practice group received actual practice plus mental practice for 20 minutes training session, 5 days a week for four weeks. Force platform was used to assess the time required for tasks, distance of weight transfer and additionally, time up and go(TUG) test was conducted. The results showed that actual + mental practice and actual practice was significantly effect on reducing task time, distance of weight shifting and TUG than control group(p<.05). However, mental practice and control group did not result in a clinically meaningful improvement in stroke patients. We described the appropriate delivery and method of both actual and mental practice, as well as to determine most effective interventions on dynamic balance and functional ability. These finding suggest actual practice or actual practice plus mental practice are helpful improving weight shift and functional ability in stroke patients.
