Abstract

This study was to investigate the effect of sitting balance ability through dual motor task training on sitting position in chronic stroke patients. Twenty-eight subjects after twelve month post stroke were participated. The subjects were randomly divided into two groups: an dual motor task training group (n=14) and a control group (n=14). Both groups received conventional rehabilitation program for five session sixty minutes per week during six weeks. Dual motor task training group practiced additional dual motor task training programs on thirty minutes a day, three days a week during six weeks. Main outcome measures were right/left, anterior/posterior, and total sway velocity on sitting position using forceplate with three conditions(eye opened, eye closed, and foam). Tests performed six weeks before and after the experimental treatment program. The results of study represented that the dual motor task training group showed significant improvement in sitting balance (right/left and total sway velocity) (p<.05). In conclusion, dual motor task training combined with a conventional rehabilitation program improves sitting balance. These results suggest that dual motor task training is feasible and beneficial for individuals with a chronic stroke.
