Abstract
Although mental practice, including motor learning and recovery of unction, is a widely used approach in several countries in the rehabilitation of hemiplegic patients, its effectiveness is uncertain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness and applicability of mental practice in the rehabilitation of adults with post-stroke hemiplegia. Electronic databases were systematically searched using the following keywords: “motor imagery”, “mental practice”, “hemiplegia”, “stroke”, “upper extremity”, and “lower extremity”. Twenty four trials were selected and classified according to clinical performance. Evidence indicates that motor recovery of function are optimal mental practice techniques. Mental practice proves effective in the treatment of hemiplegia patients. However, mental practice when combined with another therapy is more effective than treatment with mental practice alone. Neuroscience aspects of selected studies are discussed and the need for further research is suggested.
