Abstract

It is necessary to intervene early in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and apply a variety of protocols in consideration of daily activities and quality of life. The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficacy of working memory-based communication intervention for MCI and its difference by application methods including general intervention, engagement of communication partner (CP), and self-training. The repeated measures ANOVA compared intervention effects across variables. Thirty-seven MCI patients (general 12, CP 11, self-training 14) performed the intervention protocol. The main findings were as follows. Firstly, our intervention protocol improved the performances of working memory, communication (comprehension, expression, pragmatic language), and subjective cognitive- communication. Secondly, pre-post differences in groups were CP intervention, general intervention, and self-training in order. Lastly, the efficacy of CP intervention was noticeable in verbal working memory, expression, and subjective cognitive-communication. This study proves that effects of working memory-based communication intervention for MCI patients are significant, and vary with types of application. Current study also provides the evidence-based information to develop the protocols increasing the efficacy of intervention with various application methods.
