Abstract

Cognitive-communication performance is strongly influenced by cognitive reserve (CR), support group, and motivation in older adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The purpose of this study was to analyze the influencing factors on cognitive-communication performance for MCI. A total of 36 adults over the age of 65 with MCI were divided into ‘education’ (n=17) and ‘non-education’ (n=19) groups, based on the participation in communication partner education. The subjects completed cognitive-communication tasks, a cognitive reserve index, and a help-seeking motivation test. The main findings were as follows. Firstly, CR was significantly associated with most cognitive-communication abilities and help-seeking motivation in the education group. Secondly, pragmatic language was the factor that predicted many domains like higher order cognition and expression. CR was also the main predictor of general cognitive-communication. The current study provides evidence-based information in applying integrated intervention for MCI.
