초록

Background & Aims: This study aims to examine the impact of earmuff attenuation on signal-to-noise ratio in decibels (dB SNR) of transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) under white noise conditions and to evaluate its practicality. Participants & Method: Twenty subjects (40 ears), 22.4±1.34 years of age, with normal hearing participated in the study. TEOAE were recorded in both white noise (white-TE) and white noise with earmuffs (muff-TE) following a baseline measurement in quiet conditions (quiet-TE). The white noise started at 40 dB SPL and was then adjusted by increments of 10 dB or decrements of 5 dB based on TEOAE recording outcomes. The changes in dB SNR for white-TE and muff-TE across varying levels of white noise at frequencies of 1,000, 1,414, 2,000, 2,828, 4,000 Hz, and averaged across five frequencies (5-freq) were analyzed using one-way ANOVA, followed by Scheffé post hoc comparisons. Results: For white-TE, a significant difference in dB SNR was observed compared to quiet-TE when the SPL reached 50 dB or higher at 1,414 Hz and 2,000 Hz, and 45 dB or higher at 2,828 Hz, 4,000 Hz, and the 5-freq (p < 0.05). In the case of muff-TE, significant differences were observed at 60 dB SPL or higher at 1,414 Hz, and at 70 dB SPL for 1,000 Hz, 2,000 Hz, 2,828 Hz, and the 5-freq (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Earmuffs attenuate white noise by over 17 dB, and TEOAE can be implemented in noise levels up to 68.5 dB SPL. Earmuffs are anticipated to benefit real-time monitoring of temporary threshold shift in noisy workplaces and the early identification of hearing loss.
