『백석시의 물명고』의 어석방법과 국어사전의 문제점

이 글은 백석 시어 분류사전인 『백석 시의 물명고』에서 시도한 어석 방법을 소개하고, 이 사전을 통해 확인된 백석 시의 용례를 바탕으로 현행 국어사전의 문제점과 보완점을 제시하기 위해 쓰여 졌다. 시인들은 자신의 생활체험에서 체득한 말을 시로 적기 때문에 그가 구사한 시어들은 적어도 그 유사단어의 흔적이 문헌들에 남아 있고, 말을 만들어 쓰는 경우에도 있는 말을 조합해서 쓴다는 점에 착안하여 이 책에선 유사단어의 유추와 형태분석의 시도를 통해 난해어의 어석을 시도하였다. 또 그림은 문자적 설명의 한계를 보완해주고, 지도는 등고선을 비롯한 지도표시를 통해 독자들에게 상상을 통해 사진 보다 훨씬 더 광범위한 경치를 떠올리게 해 주기 때문에 어석에 그림과 지도를 첨부하였다. 백석은 평안 방언과 함경 방언, 그리고 표준어를 모두 정확히 구사했기 때문에 그의 시들은 국어사전의 정오를 판단하는 데 중요한 근거가 된다는 점에 착안하여 백석시의 용례를 바탕으로 현행 국어사전에서 수정 내지는 보완할 필요가 있는 표제어들을 제시하였다. 현행 국어사전엔 용례가 누락되거나 부실한 경우가 많은 점을 지적하고, 북방 어휘와 표준어를 다양하고 정확하게 구사한 백석 시에 이를 채워 줄 좋은 용례가 많다는 점을 구체적인 사례를 통해 소개하였다. 마지막으로 식물 어휘의 경우 과학적 사실의 설명에 기초하되, 외양의 특징에 대한 묘사를 첨가해야 보다 실효성 있는 국어사전이 될 수 있음을 지적하였다.
Abstract
This article was written to introduce Definition method of 『Baek Seok Poetry’s Mulmyeong Go』, and to present the problems and complementary points of the current Korean dictionary based on the usages tried in Baek Seok’s poems. Poets usually transcribe words acquired from their life experiences into poetry, thus, an attempt is made to interpret these words through the analogy of similar words and also by trying to interpret them in a word form analysis, assuming that the words used will remain at least in the literature. Also, pictures and maps are attached in addition to definitions because they complement the limitations of the textual descriptions. Baek Seok used the words that he acquired from his life, and he spoke the perfect standard Korean language, so his poems serve as an important basis for judging the correctness of definitions in Korean dictionary. Based on this point and based on their usage in Baek Seok’s poetry, entry words needing to be modified in Korean dictionary were identified. In addition, it was pointed out that, in Korean dictionary, only a small portion of the usage is given, and that, in Baek Seok’s poems, there are many good examples to complement this. Finally, it was pointed out that in the case of vocabulary regarding plants, adding feature descriptions of their appearances would help make Korean dictionary more useful.
